BRUSSELS and LOS ALTOS, CA /PRNewswire/ -- SoftKinetic, the "world's leading provider of 3D vision and gesture-recognition solutions," announced that meta, maker of wearable computing and augmented reality (AR) solutions, has selected SoftKinetic's 3D camera technology and gesture-recognition middleware for the launch of its Meta. 01 wearable device. Meta. 01 is a set of augmented reality Space Glasses, featuring SoftKinetic's DepthSense 325 camera and an accompanying software developer kit (SDK) that includes iisu, SoftKinetic's industry-leading middleware for gesture tracking.
meta recently launched a successful Kickstarter campaign, offering backers its customized hardware components and robust SDK, featuring the most advanced and affordable interface for AR. SoftKinetic's iisu is optimized for high performance, providing scene analysis, hand and finger tracking, and lag-free gesture recognition. The DepthSense 325 is capable of capturing gestures as close as 15 cm, at 60 fps. Early adopters from meta's Kickstarter campaign are given the first opportunity to develop a wide range of applications with Space Glasses and SDK, before Meta. 01 is officially launched to consumers in 2014.
"Augmented reality is a very exciting field of technology innovation and development at the moment, and the recent progresses made in 3D vision and gesture recognition provide the missing link between the real and the virtual," said Michel Tombroff, CEO of SoftKinetic. "meta has made significant strides in creating a truly immersive augmented experience with its Space Glasses, and we are excited to lend our expertise via our camera and middleware."
"We are confident that everyday augmented reality is not a question of 'if' any longer, but 'when,'" said Meron Gribetz, CEO at meta. "We want to be at the forefront as this new technological revolution gets underway, and we are excited to have aligned ourselves with SoftKinetic, who can provide the functionality and capabilities necessary to turn our vision into reality."
At meta, we are pioneering reality-based computing. We allow people to see and interact with virtual objects and apps in their real environment, using a system made from AR glasses and gestural input. Our goal is to be the next evolution in computation, replacing desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones with a much more natural system set entirely in a pair of glasses. meta 's unique device consists of see-through computer glasses, with integrated gestural control and a novel operating system, backed by an AR app store. Our app store and application programming interface are based on Unity3D, the most popular graphics engine for ease of adoption.
