The RLS AM8192B magnetic rotary encoder from Renishaw Inc., Hoffman Estates, IL, has operational speeds up to 38,000 rpm at 13-bit resolution (60,000 rpm at 12-bit resolution) and a software interface to adjust settings. The device combines a separate magnet and ASIC; the ASIC contains an array of Hall effect sensors that generates a voltage when exposed to the magnetic flux field. The ASIC's configurable internal interpolator converts the sine and cosine voltage outputs to a range of binary and decimal resolutions. The encoder can operate in areas with high external magnetic fields. Positioning accuracy is 0.3° and operational temperature range is –40°C to 125°C.
