LiDAR System Covers 360° Around Vehicle

Robotic vision company AEye has completed a successful live metropolitan demo of its solid-state commercial LiDAR system with 360° vehicle coverage. The system employs a dense 150-vertical-channel LiDAR scanner, paired with region-of-interest configurability for ranges up to 300m.  According to AEye, this is the market’s first commercial solid state system capable of 360° coverage and real-time software configurability.

The system architecture is highly integrated and employs algorithms to emulate how the visual cortex pre-processes and customizes information sent to the brain. The system essentially combines computer vision and 1,550-nm band LiDAR for intelligent data collection, rapid perception, and motion planning. Having a visual cortex behind the eyes of the vehicle improves reliability, lowers power requirements, and reduces median system bandwidth requirements.

Software-configurable hardware works in conjunction with control-system software to selectively customize data collection in real-time. Simultaneously, optional edge processing reduces control-loop latency. Additionally, the system relies on a MEMS-based design for rapid development, customization, and cost-effective manufacturing at scale.
