Xsens Acquires Assets of Utellus

August 7, 2008

The purchase adds impulse-radio UWB-based technology to Xsens' product line, complimenting its inertial-based motion-tracking systems.

Enschede, The Netherlands -- Xsens Technologies B.V. announced that it has completed the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Utellus B.V., a privately held technology company with deep knowledge of impulse-radio ultra-wide band (UWB) technology and applications. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Utellus was founded in 2003 as a spin-off from Ericsson EuroLabs in Enschede. Utellus has successfully demonstrated UWB technology for accurate position tracking at high update rates for several applications.

"Utellus has a unique level of in-depth experience and knowledge of impulse-radio UWB-based systems. Specifically, their knowledge of UWB technology for high-accuracy real-time tracking in exceptionally challenging environments is very exciting for us here at Xsens." said Per Slycke founder and CTO of Xsens. "UWB-based tracking technology is complementary to Xsens' inertial-based motion tracking, essentially adding the equivalent of an indoor GPS system to Xsens' current range of products."

Fred Dijkstra, founder and CEO of Utellus added "With Xsens, there is a strategic fit on a technological level. The opportunities for accurate 6DoF tracking solutions, combined with the freedom of movement that inertial sensors offer, open up new possibilities for wide-area tracking solutions. With this incorporation, we will combine our knowledge and implement best-of-both-worlds solutions for our customers."

About Utellus
Utellus B.V. is a wireless technology company, developing tele-interactive systems, characterized by mobile ad-hoc networks in which ranging, positioning, timing, distributed sensing, and communication are combined. Using the profound experience with wireless ad-hoc communication, real-time systems, and impulse-radio, Utellus has implemented wireless positioned sensor networks, high-update rate 3D tracking, indoor navigation, and mobile ad-hoc real-time communication systems. Utellus has done so in international markets like defense, petrochemical, automotive, entertainment, and outdoor gaming.

About Xsens
