University Hospital of Ghent Chooses AeroScout

AeroScout, Cisco and Emergin to track location and status of patients at 1000+ bed Belgium hospital.

SAN MATEO, CA /PRNewswire/ -- AeroScout, Inc., the leading provider of Wi-Fi-based Active RFID solutions, announced an innovative patient safety project at the University Hospital of Ghent (UZ Ghent) in Belgium. Together with Cisco Systems and Emergin, AeroScout will track the location and status of at-risk patients as they move throughout the hospital, enabling staff to more efficiently respond to emergencies.

"In the fast-paced environment of hospital care, delays in response to patient events can sometimes have serious consequences," said Bart Sijnave, CIO, University Hospital of Ghent. "We are not only reducing patient event response time dramatically, but also extending this to anywhere in the hospital. We look forward to the additional benefits our patients will receive from AeroScout's technology."

Patients at UZ Ghent's Cardiology Department utilize mobile monitoring equipment to track their medical status. When a patient emergency event occurs, a quick response time is critical in order to ensure patient safety. If the patient is not in their room or the immediate area, they are often at risk.

For the first stage of the UZ Ghent project, AeroScout tags will be attached to the monitoring equipment, and accurately located using the hospital's Cisco Wi-Fi network and the Cisco 2710 wireless location appliance. If a patient emergency occurs, the patient's location will be reported through the tags, using AeroScout MobileView software and the Emergin Enterprise Service Bus to trigger an immediate phone call to a nurse carrying a Cisco IP phone. This ensures that staff can respond to patient events quickly and with full knowledge, even when the patients have left the Cardiology Department.

"The combination of Active RFID with Wi-Fi capabilities continues to deliver unparalleled benefits to hospitals worldwide," said Gabi Daniely, VP of marketing and product strategy for AeroScout. "The Ghent installation is a perfect example of a hospital gaining additional value from their Wi-Fi infrastructure, integrating seamlessly with existing communication devices, and delivering advanced patient care with significant ROI."

AeroScout will demonstrate the joint AeroScout/Cisco/Emergin solution in booth #4205 at HIMSS07, the premier Healthcare IT show, taking place this week in New Orleans. The demonstration will also be available at the Cisco booth, #927 on the main aisle way. For more information, please contact info@aeroscout.com.
