Researchers Exploring Network to Complement DART for Tsunami Detection

December 1, 2006

Researchers are working to develop a network of ocean-floor and mobile sensors that would monitor tsunamis in real time.

The low-cost devices would complement existing deep-water tsunami-detection buoys, such as those in the Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) programs, providing measurements and analysis of seismic movements more quickly and accurately than the buoys alone.
