mPhase and AlwaysReady Enter Sensor Market with Smart NanoBatteryJuly 11, 2008
The technology's key feature is its ability to activate individual sensors or the entire network remotely via a radio frequency signal.
LITTLE FALLS, NJ /Marketwire/ -- mPhase Technologies Inc. and its subsidiary AlwaysReady Inc. announced that development of their Smart NanoBattery is expected to position the company for entry into the sensor network market. The key feature of the technology that is being explored is the wireless activation capability, by which individual sensors or the entire network could be remotely activated at will via a radiofrequency signal.
The ability for the user to activate the Smart NanoBattery at will is known as Power on Command. While all methods of activating the Smart NanoBattery benefit from this feature, wireless activation in particular offers an additional benefit—the user is not required to be physically present or to have a predeveloped wired system to initiate power. This is a significant advantage over conventional batteries, which usually do not permit precise user control over when or where the battery operation begins. It is especially valuable in situations where reliable power is critical and where access to a remote area may be difficult. It could also be applied in cases where numerous devices need to be activated simultaneously.
Sensor networks, which consist of multiple autonomous devices working together, are used in both military and consumer applications. Devices within such networks are often used to monitor or control an environment or habitat and may respond to sound, motion, vibration, or other stimuli. In a distributed array of sensors, each could include a Smart NanoBattery. Sensor networks could be used, for example, to monitor traffic or pollution, in home security systems, in healthcare applications, for fire detection, and for military battlefield surveillance. The number of potential applications is growing, providing an excellent opportunity for mPhase/AlwaysReady to leverage the Smart NanoBattery strengths.
Fred Allen, AlwaysReady CEO, said, "We believe that the Smart NanoBattery can serve as a key platform technology in sensor network development because we offer advantages that other battery developers do not. Mobility, for example, is a key issue—when sensor nodes or base stations are moving, a wired system may not be possible. In this case, remote activation may be the only solution."
