Crossbow Introduces IRIS Wireless Product LineApril 25, 2007
The new platform offers three times the radio range at half the power consumption for wireless sensor networking applications.
SAN JOSE, CA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Crossbow Technology, Inc., a leading supplier of wireless sensor technology and inertial MEMS sensors for navigation and control, announced the release of IRIS, a new family of ultra low-power, long-range wireless sensor network products. The IRIS platform features the following:
- Wider coverage area, with up to three times the radio range of comparable devices using IEEE 802.15.4 compliant radios
- Ultra low-power consumption with half the sleep current of previous products for longer battery life
- Optimized for richer applications with twice the program memory of previous products
- Class-leading performance provided at compelling new price points, as low as $29 per unit for volume purchases of the "postage stamp" form factor
"IRIS gives customers the best of both worlds in their wireless sensor network deployments—long range and low power consumption in a single product," said Mike Horton, President & CEO of Crossbow. "Customers no longer have to make the tradeoff between power and coverage area in developing wireless monitoring and control applications."
The new IRIS product line includes the IRIS OEM Module, IRIS Mote, and IRIS OEM Design Kit. The IRIS OEM Module is a 24mm x 24mm "postage stamp" module optimized for fast, seamless integration of low-power, wireless mesh-networking into OEM hardware designs. Once customers complete their evaluation, they transition from engineering prototype to volume production using this surface-mount, stamp-size module.
The IRIS Mote includes an IRIS OEM Module, sensor expansion port and battery holder. It speeds up wireless sensor network evaluation with its integrated form factor. "The IRIS Mote provides the most versatility for evaluating a wide range of sensors," said Ralph Kling, Chief Architect of Crossbow. "Customers can choose from a complete line of sensors from Crossbow and third parties that provide inputs such as light, humidity, barometric pressure, and temperature, as well as sophisticated data such as acoustic, magnetic, global positioning and acceleration signals."
The IRIS OEM Design Kit features a complete solution for prototyping and development. It includes MoteWorks™, a fully integrated software platform, OEM Reference Designs, OEM Modules, OEM Module Programmer, OEM Debug Pod, sensor/data acquisition boards, and an Ethernet base station for connecting to a PC or LAN.
The new IRIS product line will be available starting in late Q2, and fully supported in Crossbow's MoteWorks development environment. The IRIS OEM Module will be available at $29 per module in order sizes of 1,000 units. Advance sales inquiries may be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Crossbow is demonstrating IRIS at the Information Processing in Sensor Networks ("IPSN") and Fourth International TinyOS Technology Exchange ("TTX4") conferences in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 26-28.
