Landis+Gyr Wins Smart Grid Project with Texas Utility

June 22, 2010

CPS Energy will deploy the company's smart meters in San Antonio, TX.

ATLANTA, GA /PRNewswire/ -- Landis+Gyr, the world's largest smart meter solutions provider, announced it has been selected by CPS Energy, the largest electric and natural gas municipal utility in the U.S., to deploy Landis+Gyr's Gridstream smart grid solution for its more than one million electric and natural gas customers in San Antonio, TX.

The deal bolsters Landis+Gyr's position as the leading smart meter solutions provider in Texas, one of the largest utility markets in the U.S., in changing the way Americans manage energy. Landis+Gyr is now deploying more than five million smart meters with forward-looking Texas utilities, including Oncor, AEP- Texas, Austin Energy and CPS Energy—the equivalent of equipping one in every two Texas households with the power to manage energy better.

CPS Energy plans to begin the deployment of the Landis+Gyr Gridstream RF technology, including advanced meters and supporting network infrastructure, later this year with a goal to complete the work by 2015. Gridstream RF is a two-way mesh network that delivers advanced metering, distribution automation and personal energy management communications.

Based in San Antonio, TX, CPS Energy provides electric service to 707,000 customers and natural gas service to 322,000 customers in and surrounding the U.S.'s seventh-largest city. The utility is a leader in alternative energy generation, including wind and solar.

"CPS Energy's investment in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) over the next several years will be the technological foundation for our smart grid," said Anthony Hawkins, CPS Energy Director of System Measurement & Technology. "The information derived from AMI will improve operational efficiency and reliability as well as empower consumers to manage their energy use and make more informed decisions in future years."

Landis+Gyr North America CEO Richard Mora said the company is looking forward to partnering with CPS Energy on a variety of smart grid initiatives as part of this project.

"CPS Energy's decision to select the Landis+Gyr smart meter solution is further evidence of our leadership role in helping to build out the smart grid, not only in Texas but in the greater U.S. and many other key markets around the world," Mora said. "This project allows Landis+Gyr to illustrate the comprehensive solution provided by Gridstream, and will be the first large scale deployment of the Gridstream two-way gas module. We look forward to offering CPS the tools and know-how to provide new services in the future that will help their consumers manage energy better."

Landis+Gyr is helping design the smart grid of the future by connecting utilities to important information and control points throughout the distribution network. With Gridstream, utilities are able to offer consumers a broad array of new pricing, demand response and energy automation options that enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electric grid. Energy consumers benefit from more information, expanded choices, and simplified management of their energy while protecting the environment.
