Hummingbird in the Eye of the Hurrikan

November 28, 2012

Salvia Lifetec has chosen Hummingbird Sensing Technology's Paracube Micro oxygen sensor for use in its Hurrikan 200 CPAP device.

CROWBOROUGH, U.K. -- Salvia Lifetec, a major supplier of OEM medical technology, has selected the Paracube Micro oxygen sensor to provide optional oxygen monitoring within the new Hurrikan 200 Acute CPAP device.

Designed for clinical or hospital use, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy is a form of ventilation where the breathing of the patient is supported by a user selected pressure. The Hurrikan offers reliable CPAP breathing therapy with dynamic leakage compensation, enabling the device to determine mask-related leakage on a breath-to-breath basis and compensate accordingly.

Offering a full measurement range of 21%–100% O2, the Micro utilises Hummingbird's proven paramagnetic cell technology to deliver the Hurrikan O2 measurements with industry-leading levels of stability, accuracy and reliability. The Micro's compact design and flexible mechanical and electrical interface ensured easy physical and system integration into the charisma.

The Hurrikan is the first device of its kind to benefit from the non-depleting paramagnetic sensing technology offered by the Micro. Unlike electrochemical cell technology which requires frequent replacement, the non-consumable design of the Micro offers exceptional low cost of ownership, with zero ongoing costs and the elimination of daily calibration due to excellent measurement stability.

Offered as an upgradable option for monitoring delivered O2, the popularity of this non-consuming measurement has helped drive the success of the Hurrikan 200's recent launch—underlining the importance placed by customers on the Micro's reliable and stable performance, low maintenance requirements and zero cost-of-ownership.

"The incorporation of the Paracube Micro into the Hurrikan shows the continued versatility of this oxygen sensor and its superiority as a replacement technology for electrochemical sensing in a wide range of medical applications," says Martin Cox, Business Unit Manager, Hummingbird Sensing Technology.

"We thank Salvia Lifetec for selecting us to work with them on this important product and look forward to working with them future projects."
