RFMD’s GPS LNA Module Secures Design Wins

October 16, 2009

The RF2815 module will support multiple upcoming 3G smartphones and data cards, and the current activity is expected to reach revenue levels of multiple millions of dollars per quarter as early as March 2010.

GREENSBORO, NC /GLOBE NEWSWIRE/ -- RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD), a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance semiconductor components, announced it has secured multiple high-volume design wins for its RF2815 GPS LNA module. The design wins are in support of multiple upcoming 3G smartphones and 3G data cards, and volume production is expected to commence in RFMD's December 2009 quarter, with a significant increase in volume anticipated in calendar year 2010.

The design wins represent a significant milestone for RFMD because they supplement the company's revenue growth in power amplifiers/transmit modules and highlight the ongoing positive design activity achieved by RFMD's switch and signal conditioning product line (SSCPL) since its formation in 2007. The incremental content opportunity available to RFMD's SSCPL is significantly expanding RFMD's total addressable market and bolstering its customer and channel-partner relationships by extending its support for the entire RF front end (transceiver to antenna interface).

RFMD's RF2815 is currently designed into 3G smartphones and 3G data cards, manufactured by customers in China, Europe, Korea, North America, and Taiwan. The positive design activity supports RFMD's market and customer diversification efforts and is currently expected to reach revenue levels of multiple millions of dollars per quarter as early as the March 2010 quarter.

RFMD is a leading provider of GSM/GPRS, EDGE, and 3G transmit modules and power amplifiers to global manufacturers of handsets, smartphones, and data cards. RFMD expects to expand its dollar content opportunity in both the power amplifier/transmit module and switch and signal conditioning segments in calendar year 2010.

The RF2815 integrates a low noise-figure LNA, output SAW filter, and supporting components in a compact 3.3 by 2.1 by 1.0 mm module. The highly integrated RF2815 is optimized for both solution size and performance and is designed for battery-powered mobile devices, such as portable navigation devices and GPS-enabled handsets, requiring high sensitivity.
