Wireless Sensor Networks and Software Agents Detect and Characterize Fire

November 10, 2006

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have demonstrated the use of software agents that can navigate a robot safely through a simulated fire scene and identify danger spots by seeking out heat.

Once the agent locates the fire, it can clone itself to surround the fire. People can then communicate with the agent through personal digital assistants (PDA) to learn where and how intense the fire is. Should the fire expand, the agents can clone again to maintain the ring.  Read the full story.
