SMI to Develop PDA-Based Radiation Detector with GPS and Wireless

(From company release) -- Structured Materials Industries, Inc. (SMI) has received additional funding from the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Countermeasures subgroup of Technical Support Working Group (TWSG) to enhance a Department of Homeland Security-funded task. The goal is to integrate enhanced radiation detection capabilities into a compact personal pager-PDA device with global positioning system (GPS) for use by public safety and homeland security professionals. Periodically, on command and at set alarm levels, the device will automatically report radiation levels, plus time and position information (in accordance with locally defined reporting schedules) to a radiological emergency monitoring facility at the local or regional level.


This same unit offers Blue Force tracking (reporting positions of friendly forces to military units), and the potential to add on a variety of additional sensors for chemical, biological, health, and other types of monitoring.
