New 3D Vision Sensor Destined for Playstation Eye Toy?

August 14, 2006

Image sensor/processor combination perceives the world in 3D and derives an understanding based on sight.

"Prime Sense is currently operating in stealth mode," says a notice on the Web site of the Israeli startup company, Prime Sense Inc. The company's sensor includes a digital processor to provide a real-time 3-D mapping of objects in space; an article in EE Times Europe has linked the company and its product to an upgrade to the "Eye Toy" for the Sony Playstation.

"In essence it appears to be an image sensor and processor combination which perceives the world in 3D and derives an understanding of the world based on sight, in the same way that humans do," says the article.
