Flexpoint Moves Into European Automotive Market

October 25, 2007

The sensor manufacturer is working with three tier-one suppliers and one auto manufacturer to test and adapt its Bend Sensor technology.

DRAPER, Utah /BUSINESS WIRE/ -- Flexpoint Sensor Systems Inc. commented on the advancement of its automotive technology currently being tested and adapted to specific uses in the auto industry.

Flexpoint's business team and engineers have traveled to Europe twice in the past three months to meet with auto companies interested in bringing Flexpoint's Bend Sensor technology to market. Currently, there are three tier-one suppliers and one auto manufacturer testing and adapting the technology for the auto industry.

Flexpoint continues to work closely with one of the world's largest auto suppliers, France's Faurecia. Faurecia is examining the Bend Sensor technology in applications ranging from safety uses to passenger conveniences. Although the safety applications require long testing and development phases, the convenience applications can be implemented more rapidly. They are often the result of building a better mousetrap at a lower price. The two companies have discussed a number of these uses and are now focusing on two applications for vehicle seats.

On a recent trip to Europe, CEO Clark Mower met with a German automaker to further Flexpoint's new Seat Belt Reminder System, which includes a heating element. The automaker sees the value in combining these two technologies into one system. Having completed the initial testing on the combined system, the manufacturer is working with Flexpoint on its latest prototype to produce the required heating temperatures.

"Our past few trips to Europe have been very productive in moving forward on our automotive applications," commented Flexpoint's CEO Clark Mower. "Some of the suppliers and automakers are now coming to us with their ideas and asking if the Bend Sensor can provide solutions to their challenges. We are proving the sensor's capabilities in a number of nonsafety applications, which require shorter testing times, which equates to faster integration into new vehicles. Due to the potential revenues involved in automotive contracts, we remain focused in adapting our technology to this marketplace."

Flexpoint announced a contract with Intertek Industrial Corp., which has incorporated the Bend Sensor technology into its Protek Passenger Awareness System. The smart passenger safety system is installed in the seats of the rear compartment of the emergency vehicle and provides the driver with constant feed back as to the seated-and-secured status of personnel in the rear of the vehicle. Intertek recently introduced and showcased the innovative Awareness System at the industry's largest event, EMS Expo 2007 in Orlando, FL.

Intertek's General Manager stated, "The Protek Passenger Awareness System was very well received at the Expo and truly caught the attention of the industry. We received many outstanding comments from both the vehicle manufacturers and medical technicians themselves. All were inspired by the technology that Intertek and Flexpoint will be bringing to the market to help save the lives of those traveling in the rear of these emergency vehicles."
