Technologies:

  • Gas Sensors: Gas sensors include oxygen sensors and nitrogen oxide (NOx) sensors. They are used to measure the volume of oxygen or toxic gases such as NOx and carbon monoxide in the exhaust system.
  • Pressure Sensors: These include pressure and flow sensors used in power train systems of passenger cars and pressure sensors used in brake, airbag, and tire pressure monitoring systems.
  • Temperature Sensors: These are used in passenger cars to ensure proper operating temperature conditions in the system and to improve its efficiency. The two systems that primarily use temperature sensors are power train and heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC).
  • Position Sensors: Position Sensors provide location inputs of a moving part to the electronic control unit. These sensors are used in electronic systems that replace mechanical linkages in automobiles, and pave the way for X-by-wire systems of the future.

Market Overview
The Chinese automotive sensors market, which is in its growth stage, is seeing tremendous growth due to the continuous rise in passenger vehicle production. To meet the growing customer demands, Chinese vehicle manufacturers are developing new car models that are competitively priced and employ more electronic control units as well as non-traditional sensors. Increased safety concerns and stringent emission norms are also influencing market growth and Euro norms, which were introduced and implemented in 2001, are expected to lead the increase in sales of most types of sensors (including gas sensors and exhaust gas recirculation valve position sensors). Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensors are also likely to benefit from such measures and with the implementation of more stringent emission norms, there is likely to be further demand for advanced NOx and gas sensors.

Given these positives, the Chinese automotive sensors market is also witnessing intense competition as many multinational sensor companies have set up joint ventures, subsidiaries, or distribution offices in China. With the increase in sensor suppliers, domestic companies are offering lower prices, which are leading to strong price pressures. Also, automakers are exerting greater pressure on their sensor suppliers for the design and development of advanced sensors, notes the analyst of this research service. Most passenger vehicles now embody new technologies in electronics, computer software, and materials and suppliers must be able to develop and update their products to ensure customer retention.

The increasing use of ECUs and novel vehicular systems such as tire pressure monitoring systems, air bags, and anti lock braking systems has resulted in a greater number of sensors being employed in modern day vehicles. As an example of this, new antilock braking systems are likely to require more than three to four sensors to be installed in one car. Passenger cars in China are increasingly being equipped with ECUs and this trend is expected to further strengthen as the technology becomes more mature and affordable. Since ECUs require inputs of varied parameters such as engine temperature, pressure, and others to provide optimal system performance, sensors that measure temperature and throttle position are expected to see higher demand.

Overall, the increased use of sensors in the fast-growing passenger car market is expected to be the predominant driver for the growth of the total Chinese automotive sensors market. Further, the number of unit sensors used per passenger car is also expected to increase as more automakers are expected to employ sensors in varied new automotive applications in their new models. Among the various sensors, pressure sensors generated maximum revenues and accounted for a market share of 59.4 percent, says the analyst. While position and gas sensors held market shares of around 14.0 percent and 10.7 percent respectively, gas sensors are expected to grow rapidly during the forecast period to record the second highest revenues after pressure sensors.
