Accelerometers Stretch Cell Phone Capabilities

Lead story on cell phone portal site predicts that accelerometers will have a huge impact on portable games and other applications.v


Yesterday's top story at All About Symbian, an independent community site and portal for smartphones running the Symbian operating system, explored the use of accelerometers on smartphones. "From gaming to sports applications, here's what's currently available and what we might see in the future," the site says. The site discusses how the tilt control, afforded by accelerometers, enhance gaming ("The relevance of the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii for tilt games on phones is clear: there will soon be a vast amount of money poured into developing games with tilt-based gameplay") and have potential use for more serious applications, such as simplifying user interfaces on mobile devices. All About Symbian speculates that accelerometers could eventually be included as standard fare, just like vibrating alert technology.
