Energy harvesting provides new opportunities for sensor manufacturers in applications that would otherwise have difficulty obtaining a reliable power source or require batteries and the associated replacement effort and costs. Several techniques exist for converting mechanical or electrical energy, light, or temperature differences into energy for powering sensors including piezoelectric, radio frequency, thermoelectric, inductive coupling, wind and solar power.

Presenters in this session will provide an in-depth analysis of the challenges and solutions of using energy harvesting techniques of varying types for powering sensors. In addition to exploring the energy harvesting technologies, other system aspects will be addressed including high efficiency, low-power microcontrollers, wireless connectivity, and power management. By explaining the design-in requirements for existing energy harvesting products in real-world applications, attendees will have new tools to consider in the design of next-generation sensor systems.

Session attendees will leave with an improved understanding of:

  1. How to match the energy harvesting technology to specific applications
  2. The importance of the energy/power budget
  3. The current status of available technologies
  4. Technology direction from industry leaders
