Apache Hadoop Essentials for Sensor Integrated Systems
Sensor data is becoming more relevant to industries everyday due to cambrian explosion of computing, storage, and ubiquitous sensor deployments. New tools such as Hadoop are well suited to deal with these large sensor data repositories and can derive greater value from large tomes of big sensor data. In this session, we will introduce Hadoop in the context of the openPDC / NERC / TVA use case where we stored 4.2 billion samples per day in Hadoop. We’ll then explore Hadoop and its ecosystem of components with a demo application where we collect, transport, and process sensor data with Hadoop and its suite of components.

Upon leaving the session, attendees will be prepared to answer the following questions:

  • What is Apache Hadoop?
  • What are the components in the Hadoop ecosystem?
  • What is the motivation for using Apache Hadoop?
  • How is Hadoop being utilized with sensor data?
  • What are the benefits of analyzing data with Hadoop?

Who should attend?
This session is appropriate for developers, system administrators, managers, architects, or anyone interested learning about Apache Hadoop through the lens of sensors data.  No previous Hadoop knowledge is required.

The session will be led by Josh Patterson, a Solution Architect at Cloudera.  Prior to joining Cloudera, Josh was responsible for bringing Hadoop into the smartgrid during his involvement in the openPDC project. His focus in the smartgrid realm with Hadoop and HBase was using machine learning to discover and index anomolies in time series data. Josh is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Bachelors in Business Management and a Masters of Computer Science with a thesis titled “TinyTermite: A Secure Routing Algorithm” where he worked in mesh networks and swarm algorithms. Josh has over 13 years in software development and continues to contribute to projects in the open source community.
