Perpetuum Ltd., Southampton, U.K. and Austin, TX, has demonstrated that their vibration energy harvesters can be used to power sensors to monitor the condition of train wheel bearings. The trial showed that vibration spectra could be correlated with faulty bearings and the data transmitted wirelessly. The harvester generated tens of milliwatts, suitable for powering such a condition monitoring system.
