The BMA220 from Bosch Sensortec, Reutlingen, Germany, is a 2 by 2 by 0.98 mm triaxial MEMS accelerometer with digital output and four programmable measuring ranges from ±2 g to ±16 g. Integrated evaluation electronics recognize specific motion patterns, removing the need for intensive signal evaluation by the host application's microcontroller. The algorithms for motion recognition run on an internal ASIC allowing the sensor to autonomously and automatically distinguish between a random movement, a change in spatial position, single or double taps, and between slow and fast changes in movement. Applications include mobile phones, PDAs, and game controllers.
