Temperature Sensor, Monitor from Semtech
May 2, 2010
The 3 by 3 mm, 8-pin SX8743 from Semtech Corp., Camarillo, CA, combines an integrated temperature sensor with monitoring electronics to connect up to 3 external temperature diodes, allowing it to monitor 4 temperature zones in servers, advanced printers, appliances, and other complex systems. The device drives the sensing diodes with a variable current and converts that into digital temperature information; precision is ±0.5°C typ., ±1.5°C max. on the external sensor. Addressed through SMBus or I2C, the monitor can autonomously set or reset alarms if the sensor temperature exceeds programmed thresholds, allowing for controlled cooling while the system is shut down. Operation is from 2.7–5.5 V with 250 µA at 10 Hz temperature sampling.
