The FreeMotion Library from Sensor Platforms Inc., San Jose, CA, takes raw data from pre-installed accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, and barometers on smartphones and tablets and uses them to enable mobile applications to become context aware. The software lets mobile device designers and application developers improve product performance and reduce platform fragmentation by: minimizing power consumption through dynamic configuring, automatic throttling to reduce sensor power consumption, and efficient fixed-point implementation; enabling alternate sourcing to provide users with good information independent of the quirks of any individual sensor; maintaining sensor calibration; and providing APIs to enable more sophisticated context-awareness.
