The RWT 350/360 TorqSense noncontact digital torque measuring system from Sensor Technology Ltd., Banbury, U.K., replaces an existing pulley or sprocket and automatically compensates for the radial load. The sensor uses tiny piezoceramic combs—surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices—fixed to a purpose-designed flange. The combs distort in proportion to the instantaneous torque level and the distortion creates RF data signals that are transmitted via a noncontact RF coupling to the control unit. The sensing head is separate from the control electronics. The device is suitable for any plant driven by a belt or chain drive.
