The SimpleLink GPS CC4000 from Texas Instruments Inc., Dallas, TX, is a self-contained GPS module that minimizes the complexity in adding GPS functionality to products. The device operates with any microcontroller or microprocessor and has a sub-100 mm2 form factor. The module's push-to-fix function is hardware-controlled through a single general-purpose I/O (GPIO); switch on the GPIO to receive NMEA strings containing location, time, and velocity information. Accuracy is better than 2.5 m, timing accuracy is <100 ns, autonomous cold-start time to first fix (TTFF) is 35 s in open-sky conditions and ~1s in open-sky conditions for autonomous hot-start TTFF. Applications include asset tracking, industrial M2M, sports and fitness, and precision timing.
