The EPIC sensor, part number PS25401 from Plessey Semiconductors, Plymouth, U.K., is a version of the company's electric potential IC (EPIC) that has been tailored to detect movement and optimized for security, switching, and gaming applications. The device detects changes in the electric field and provides an output to a relay to act as a simple nontouch electric switch. The sensor can be used in both proximity mode or to detect specific kinds of movement as a limited gesture-recognition device. It does not require line-of-sight and can detect movement through walls. Applications include toys, electrical appliances, smart lighting, gaming, and security.
