Honeywell, Phoenix, AZ, offers the HMC5843 chip-scale 3-axis compass IC for mobile phones, personal navigation systems, and portable auto navigation systems. The compass can provide expanded direction awareness when overlaid on GPS-enabled maps and can display compass, pointing, and heading information regardless of the angle at which the device is held. The IC includes 3-axis magnetoresistive sensors, a 12-bit ADC, and an I2C bus in a 4 by 4 by 1.3 mm surface-mount chip-scale package.
