Boost Controller Delivers High Currents At 97% Efficiency

Replacing rectifying boost diodes with higher efficiency N-channel MOSFETs, the LTC3784 two-phase, single-output synchronous step-up dc/dc controller delivers a 24V output at 10A from a 12V input at efficiency up to 97% without a heat sink. It operates on input voltages from 4.5V to 60V during start-up, maintains operation down to 2.3 Vin after start-up, and can regulate output voltages up to 60V. The LTC3784 employs a phase-lockable switching frequency from 75 kHz to 850 kHz or a selectable fixed frequency from 50 kHz to 900 kHz. In addition, the device features adjustable cycle-by-cycle current limit and can use a sense resistor or the voltage drop across the inductor (DCR) for current sensing.
