The 3D Image Sensor from ifm efector inc., Exton, PA, uses time-of-flight distance measurement to identify the height of any object in the FOV. An integrated 64 by 48 pixel array defines the sensor's FOV. The sensor produces a light pulse which is then reflected by an object and detected by the sensor's smart pixel receiver element. Comparing the optical and electrical reference signals yields an output with the desired distance information. The sensor's receiver element is an SoC that projects 3072 points of reference. Application includes palletizing and depalletizing, material handling, and intelligent routing/sorting.
