VANTAA, Finland /BUSINESS WIRE/ -- The freedom to design motion sensing solutions that combine the best of various sensors. The power to obtain more accurate and complete information. These are some of the features offered by the VTI Technologies Sensor Fusion solution presented at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show.
"Designers of consumer electronics devices that include motion control features are facing new challenges as the number of sensors needed to offer accurate motion control has increased ," explains Mr. Pekka Kostiainen, Business Development Manager, Consumer Electronics, at VTI Technologies. "Many smart devices today integrate accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers—sensors for six degrees of freedom. How to combine the information from these sensors in an optimized way? Some sensor makers offer sensor fusion solutions that have been developed for use only with the sensors of the same manufacturer. At VTI, we believe that this is not the best way to do it. Instead, we want to offer more freedom for designers and people responsible for component procurement. Therefore, our solution is flexible and can be used with different sets of sensors."
VTI's Sensor Fusion is a 9-axis 6 DOF solution for Android devices. It includes the entire software stack, from the drivers up to the sensor API. Today it runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but it will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future. Although the development has been done using OMAP4 tools, it will be ported to other platforms too. Due to its efficient implementation, the processor load is low and the memory footprint is small.
VTI's Sensor Fusion includes the "world's smallest and least power consuming gyro," the CMR3100, which is also being launched during the 2012 International CES. The CMR3100 boasts low 2.5 mA current consumption, enabling new applications and further improving user experiences. This is a continuation of VTI's legacy small size and low power.
