LUSTENAU, Austria /BUSINESS WIRE/ -- Wipro-NewLogic, the semiconductor IP business of Wipro Ltd. and the "number one provider of wireless connectivity IPs," announced that GainSpan, an innovator in Wi-Fi sensor network technology, has licensed Wipro-NewLogic's WiLD 802.11 WLAN MAC, modem, and radio IP for use in its GS1010 system on chip (SoC) for Wi-Fi sensors.
The GainSpan GS1010 SoC is a highly integrated SoC, combining a complete WLAN subsystem, including the radio with an application CPU, SRAM and Flash memory, plus multiple I/Os for sensor connectivity. The SoC is designed for extreme low-power operations and features intelligent power management. Depending on the application, OEM products that incorporate the GainSpan GS1010 SoC can achieve battery life as long as 10 years on a single AA battery.
The WiLD IP provides a complete 802.11 WLAN solution, including MAC, modem, and radio technology. The IP supports both station and access-point modes. Wipro-NewLogic can also offer design services to customize the IP for special applications, such as sensor, industrial automation, defense, and space, among many others.
"With Wipro-NewLogic, we found an IP provider who not only had a complete and mature WLAN solution, including RF, but who could also help us customize the IP for extreme low-power operations," said Vijay Parmar, CEO at GainSpan.
"We are delighted to enable GainSpan to utilize 802.11 WLAN technology in an application that so far has been dominated by Zigbee and other implementations of IEEE 802.15.4 standards. Using our standards-compliant IP, battery-powered sensors and embedded applications based on GainSpan technology can now be deployed cost effectively, leveraging the huge installed base of Wi-Fi networks in residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal applications," said Senthil Murugesan, CEO, Wipro-NewLogic.
Wipro-NewLogic has been rated as the number one WLAN IP provider by Gartner for the third consecutive year. The WLAN IP has been integrated into SoC devices for a broad range of applications, such as audio streaming, gaming consoles, and Wi-Fi-WiMax combo chips. Besides WLAN, the company's IP portfolio includes Bluetooth, UWB, and 1394 solutions.
Wipro-NewLogic will be showcasing its WLAN and BT IP at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 8–11, 2009, in South Hall 4, booth #35716.
